Cao Dai is believed to have been founded in the twentieth century by Ngo Van Chieu. It is said the he believed that he received messages that came directly from God. Interestingly enough, the religion is currently under the control of the communist government of Viet Nam.
Cao Daiists share the Buddhist beliefs on karma and reincarnation. They also practice Ego eradication. God is worshiped as different persons: Christ, Sakyamuni, Lao Tse, Confucious, and Khuong Thai Cong. Saints of the religion are the Chinese revolutionary Sun-Yat-Sen, writer Victor Hugo, and the poet Trang Trinh.
The Tan Luat or Canonical Codes are the two guides for practice of Cao Daiists. Members must pray daily, avoid alcohol, and remain vegan 10 days of each month. There is an overall ethical code of conduct consisting of elements found in many other religions:
Do not kill living things
Do not be dishonest
Do not commit adultery
Do not get drunk
Do not sin by word
It has been estimated that approximately six to ten million in Vietnam and worldwide follow in the religion of Cao Dai. Anyone can join the religion but they must be sponsored by two members in good standing in the religion. Prayers are learned and there are public initiation ceremonies. Worship is conducted in temples similar to Buddhist temples.
There is also a hierarchy of clergy within the religion. In descending order of authority: Pope, Censor Cardinal, Cardinal, Archbishop, Bishop, Priest, Student Priest, Subdignitaries and Followers. Only men may become Pope or Censer Cardinal.
The Divine Eye is considered to be the symbol of the religion. It resembles the Masonic All Seeing Eye.
