Jainism is one of the oldest religions of the world. Its basis is in the belief of a cyclical nature of the universe, a universe without beginning or end.
Rishabhdev, known as the first Tirthankar (Maker of the ford.) is a part of this cycle of time. He is mentioned in the Rig Veda, the oldest scripture in Hinduism, which is believed to be at least 5,000 years old. There were 24 Tirthankars during this part of the cycle of time, and the last one is thought to have been Lord Mahaveer. (599-527 BCE.)
Ahinsa (Or non-violence.) is the underlying philosophy of Jainism. Ahinsa is taught as being all-encompassing and it is concerned with human and living beings, and whether they are animals, insects, plant life, or microorganisms. Jain scriptures disclose the classification and detailed descriptions of the types of living beings, as well as ways to avoid or minimize violence against them. These scriptures cover a period of time dating back thousands of years.
The objective of Jainism is to strive for and obtain Moksha or Liberation from the unending cycles of birth, death, and rebirth. A Siddha is one who has achieved this liberation. A Siddha is believed to be a soul which has achieved its original state of infinite bliss and power. Every Jiva (Or living being.) has the potential of becoming a Siddha, and therefore God.
There are the two philosophical principles of Anekantvad (Non-absolutism or Multi-sidedness) and Syadvad (Relativity or truth), and they are completely unique to the Jainism system of thought. Karma theory is also known to have its roots in Jainism, and it is explained through its scriptures.
Jainism does not state that God is the creator of the universe. God is considered to be a liberated soul (Or a Siddha.) who has obtained Moksha. God is a role model and a teacher. As stated previously, it is believed that every human/living being has the potential to become God.
Jainism teaches that humankind has its future in its own hands. All Jain rituals, religious practices, and beliefs are seen as beneficial from a scientific perspective too. Ahinsa and Vegetarianism are preached about and practiced religiously.
